A dialogical framing of AIS–SEA design

Article history: Received 15 October 2012 Received in revised form 3 October 2013 Accepted 10 October 2013 Available online 9 November 2013 Previous literature has proposed dialogical accounting as a means wherein accounting information systems can support competing, and potentially incompatible, information needs of various interested constituencies (Dillard and Yuthas, 2013). Here we extend that work by focusing on the design of social and environmental accounting (SEA) information systems that take pluralism seriously. We theorize the challenges of designing such systems wherein they are expected to address the needs of multiple users with different interests that may emerge from different economic, social, political and/or cultural perspectives, as they relate, for example, to sustainability reporting, ethical investment, participatory development studies and indigenous resource management. Using dialogic engagement, we attempt to move beyond traditional, and often highly constrained, conceptualizations of “stakeholder engagement” and propose a framework for undertaking systems design that can facilitate high quality and relevant SEA information systems that meet the needs of a wide range of actual and/or potential users. We provide an example of how the framework might be enacted using a framing methodology. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Estimating catches with automatic identification system (AIS) data: a case study of single otter trawl in Zhoushan fishing ground, China
The sailing tracks of single otter trawl vessels were simulated using cubic hermite spline (cHs) interpolation method based on the automatic identification system (AIS) data of 6 sampled vessels that were fishing in the Zhoushan fishing grounds after the close of the fishing season from September 2012 to January 2013. The vessels’ status (i.e. whether the vessels were fishing or not) were dete...

متن کاملThe paradox of understanding work for design
Studying the organization of work has become an important element in the design of systems and artefacts for work settings. However, although studies of work have had an in#uence on design, there is still some concern about the nature of the relationship between the study of work and design. Concern has been variously expressed in terms of gaps between social science and systems engineering, fo...
متن کاملResearch on the Additional Secondary Phase Factor for Automatic Identification System Signals Transmitted over a Rough Sea Surface
This paper investigates the Additional Secondary Phase Factor (ASF) characteristics of Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals spreading over a rough sea surface. According to the change of the ASFs for AIS signals in different signal form, the influences of the different propagation conditions on the ASFs are analyzed. The expression, numerical calculation, and simulation analysis of the...
متن کاملOn the importance of framing questions for user research in the experience - centered design process
A defining challenge for HCI researchers and practitioners of experience-centered design is generating holistic understandings of particular situations and phenomena observed and analyzed for design. As a result, inquiries into the complex, fluid nature of human experience have led to the development and use of numerous methods rooted in less-reductive theories and epistemologies of understandi...
